The 2026 European Throwing Cup in Nicosia was highlighted by three world leading marks across the two days of competition.
Despite far from perfect conditions, Denmark’s Katrine Koch Jacobsen broke the 75 metre-barrier in the hammer for the first time in her career with a national record of 75.52m for a significant victory on the road to the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships.
France’s Jade Maraval became the first thrower to break the 60 metre-barrier in 2026 with a world lead of 60.02m, also her first ever 60 metre-plus throw, for victory over a strong field including 2022 European champion Elina Tzengo and two-time European silver medallist Adriana Vilagos.

And on the second day, Czechia’s Volodymyr Myslyvcuk defeated an illustrious field in the men’s hammer, defeating two Olympic medallists courtesy of a first-round throw of 80.69m. Among the many other superlatives, this was his first ever 80 metre-plus throw as well as the first ever 80 metre-plus throw recorded at the European Throwing Cup since 2009.
It was also an excellent championships for Iceland whose athletes set two national records and picked up two bronze medals in the process.
Guðrún Karítas Hallgrímsdóttir won bronze in the women’s hammer on the first day with 71.41m before teammate Hilmar Örn Jónsson improved his six-year-old national record in the men’s hammer on the second day with 78.03m to win Iceland’s second bronze medal of the European Throwing Cup.

Marija Bogavac also improved her Montenegrin javelin record which dated even further back in time. She threw 56.32m to finish sixth, breaking her previous mark of 54.77m which was set all the way back in 2016 when she was still a teenager.
