European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov has praised the “strength and depth” of European throwing at the conclusion of the Nicosia 2026 European Throwing Cup on Sunday (15).
He also paid tribute to the Local Organising Committee who successfully hosted the event for the second successive year despite storms disrupting the schedule.
Excellent performances
He said: “Once again, Nicosia hosted an excellent European Throwing Cup. Congratulations to the athletes and the teams behind them on some excellent performances.
“We saw three world leads, one further European lead, four national records, two national U23 records and three European U23 leads across two days of intense and high-quality competition. There were also an incredible 21 nations who came away from Nicosia 2026 with medals.
“Europe has a long and proud history in the throws and the weekend showed the strength and depth is the disciplines remain unrivalled."
Cyprus makes strong commitment
“I would also like to express out gratitude to our hosts for another well-organised European Throwing Cup despite the very challenging weather conditions," he added, turning to the event organisers.
“One day ahead of Nicosia 2026, I also had the honour of meeting with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, alongside Pericles Markaris, President of the Amateur Athletic Association of Cyprus.
“The meeting highlighted the strong commitment provided by the Cyprus government for athletics and sport, as well as the important role major international events play in bringing communities and nations together.
“We congratulate everyone involved with Nicosia 2026 for an excellent European Throwing Cup and we look forward to returning again in 12 months time.”
