  • 75.52m! Jacobsen sets world lead and Danish hammer record for European Throwing Cup gold

Denmark’s Katrine Koch Jacobsen took the win in the senior women’s hammer at the Nicosia 2026 European Throwing Cup with a national record and world lead of 75.52m on Saturday (14).

She set the standard right from the first round with 71.25m, which would have been enough to make the podium, before extending her lead in the second round to 73.15m, and again in the final round where she finally broke 75 metres.

Ireland’s talented 22-year-old, Nicola Tuthill took second with a PB of 72.38m despite being placed in the 'B' group and competing in a separate circle to her rivals.

Iceland’s Guorun Karitas Hallgrimsdottir took third, also with a PB and national record of 71.41m.

This was Jacobsen's season opener for the hammer, also breaking her PB that had stood for nearly four years.

Tuthill was handed a tough feat when placed in the B group as her PB narrowly fell short of the top 11, but the Irish woman put out a consistent series with four throws over 70m in the competition and a new PB in the fourth round.

Hallgrimsdottir, who is club teammate of Jacobsen, broke the 70 metre-mark for the first time today in the third round with 70.84m before bettering her distance once more with 71.41m, improving her PB by 1.62m in just one day.

Poland’s Ewa Rozanska, the Munich 2022 European Championships silver medallist, threw her best throw in over three years to open her season and take fourth place with 71.04m.

Meanwhile, reigning European champion and defending European Throwing Cup winner, Sara Fantini had to settle for fifth with 71.01m today in her third competition of the season.

Rose Loga, European silver medallist, of France was one of the most exciting prospects ahead of the weekend after she threw 73.81m earlier this year, was only able to throw 69.71m today to take seventh.

She appeared to struggle with finding her power in the cold, windy, and wet conditions, leaving her trailing off the leaders.

Arguably the most decorated athlete of  the weekend, 45-year-old former Olympic champion and three-time world champion Yipsi Moreno, who now competes for Albania having previously competed for Cuba, struggled to find her form with four no-throws and a 63.00m final throw.
