  • Maisch holds off Portuguese duo to take maiden European Throwing Cup title

Germany’s Katharina Maisch needed just one throw to take the win in Cyprus for her maiden senior title at the 2026 European Throwing Cup in Nicosia on Saturday (14) with 18.32m.

But she faced pressure from the Portuguese duo of Jessica Inchude and Eliana Bandeira who finished the competition in second and third respectively.

Maisch threw her best throw in the first round before a trio of no throws followed by 17.85m in the fifth and one final no throw in the last round.

But while not the series she hoped for, it was enough to hold of the powerful Portuguese pair who had just three no throws between them both.

The trio also finished in the same order of their season’s bests as they occupy the seventh, eighth, and ninth spots on the European rankings this year.

Inchude threw 18.12m in the third round with a consistent series, including a final round attempt also over the 18 metre-mark. Her teammate Bandeira sat narrowly behind with 18.10m from the fourth round to complete the podium.

It may have been a tight contest between the top three but the next best athlete was Julia Ritter, also of Germany, with a best of 17.30m, the only other thrower to break the 17 metre-barrier.
