Following Femke Broeders-Bol's 800m debut in February she ended her indoor season early due to a foot injury, but the Dutch athlete is hoping to return to racing in May.
She explained on her Instagram in February that she was dealing with a tendon issue in her foot and had a strong reaction after her 800m race in Metz so had decided to focus on the outdoor season.
Her coach, Laurent Meuwly, explained their hopes for her return to competition and how they are approaching training to balance her injury and performance.
“We are on schedule. If everything continues to proceed normally, Femke will run her next race at the end of May," Meuwly said.
On her recovery from an injury which limited her to just the one indoor race, Meuwly said Broeders-Bol has been training hard on the bike and hopes she will return to running soon. "We are being cautious, because we don't want a relapse. But the recovery is proceeding according to plan," he added.
In her debut over the 800m, Broeders-Bol ran 1:59.07 crucially clocking under the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships standard of 1:59.80.
However, if she wants to be competitive in a field of extremely strong 800m women, including the indoor world record holder Keely Hodgkinson, getting more race time will be critical.
