  • World record! Ehammer sets heptathlon best as he wins world indoor gold

Switzerland’s Simon Ehammer set a new world record of 6,670 points as he regained the world indoor heptathlon title in brilliant style in Kujawy Pomorze on Saturday (21).

The 26-year-old athlete put together a superb series of performances across two days to improve the previous record, set by twice Olympic decathlon champion Ashton Eaton in 2012, by 25 points.

He opened with a personal best of 6.69 in the 60m on Friday (20) morning, followed by a customary strong performance in the long jump—a discipline in which he is a world and European bronze medallist—leaping out to 8.15m.

He rounded off day one with solid season’s bests in both the shot put (14.87m) and high jump (2.02m), giving him an overnight total of 3,698 points.

Hurdles brilliance

He opened day two with a world-class run of 7.52 in the 60m hurdles, the fastest time ever recorded in a heptathlon. He then went on to log the leading performance in the pole vault, clearing a season’s best 5.30m to stay firmly on track for the record.

He rounded off a magnificent two days with a personal best of 2:41.04 in the 1000m, surpassing Ashton Eaton’s 14-year-old world record by 25 points.

Ehammer last won this title in Glasgow in 2024 and also took silver four years earlier in Belgrade. This victory lays a solid foundation for the summer ahead, including the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham in 2026.

USA duo Heath Baldwin and Kyle Garland were left well adrift, taking silver and bronze with 6,337 and 6,245 points respectively.
