European Athletics is saddened to learn of the passing of Ireland’s 1956 Olympic 1500m champion Ronnie Delany, aged 91, who died on Wednesday (11).
He set an Olympic record of 3:41.2 at the time of his victory in Melbourne and he remains the last Irish athlete to have won a track and field gold medal at the Olympic Games.

He went on to win 1500m bronze at the 1958 European Athletics Championships in Stockholm. After his athletics career, he went on to a successful career in international transport industries and was later granted the Freedom of the City of Dublin.
European Athletics sends its condolences to the family and friends of Ronnie Delany and everyone at Athletics Ireland.
