European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov extended a warm welcome to the athletes competing at the Nicosia 2026 European Throwing Cup on the eve of the competition’s start.

He highlighted the importance of coming together for sport and celebrate one another despite current global challenges, also stressing the importance of Nicosia 2026 for the rest of the competition calendar.

“I want to thank all the member federations and to all the athletes who are here in this challenging time,” he said.

“But with challenges, there is also opportunity. The opportunity that we have to show to the world that for us, our core business is the competition, is more important than the challenges.

“We have to show the world also that the Cyprus Athletics Federation did really a great job and they will deliver these championships to a really great level.”

Around 280 athletes from 34 European nations will be competing across the two days in Nicosia, with many of the top athletes taking the chance to open their seasons and chase qualifying standards and ranking points ahead of the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships.

"It’s all for the athletes"

There are many established global stars set to compete, accompanied by some of Europe’s best upcoming, young talent.

This unique competition provides a platform for the throwers to thrive as they take centre stage and start to build towards an exciting outdoor season.

“We have a lot of champions and I'm really proud to be on the same table with such a big athletes,” President Karamarinov added.

“Because all of what we did, what we do, what we will do, as European Athletics, is because of you. All we do, it's because of your future, because you are our future.

President Karamarinov concluded by saying: “And my dear athletes, good luck, but not only for the next two days, good luck for this really important for European Athletics year, 2026, and good luck for the future.

“From European Athletics side and from my side, big thanks and good luck.”

Showcasing Cypriot athletics

President Karamarinov was joined by the Cyprus Athletics Federation President Periclis Markaris, who emphasised the importance of bringing such competitions to Nicosia not just for local athletes but international too.

“We are deeply honoured to welcome everyone back to Cyprus for the European Throwing Cup 2026,” said Markaris.

“The staging of such an important European competition is an honour for Cyprus and signifies the rising level of Cyprus athletics, as well as showcasing the continuous trust of European athletics in our federation, in our country.

“The National Athletic Stadium of Cyprus has been well prepared, and we are ready to stage the European Throwing Cup this weekend in Nicosia.

“Despite the recent developments related to the political situation in the Middle East, all athletes will safely and peacefully compete, including numerous Olympic, world and European champions.

“I wish all the best to our local throwers as well as to all European athletes who are participating in this wonderful competition, and hope that everyone will happily and peacefully return next year.”
