  • Global champions and medallists headline strong field event line-ups in Dresden

Strong field event line-ups have been assembled for the Goldenes Oval, a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting, in Dresden on 31 May.

The Goldenes Oval will be streamed live on the European Athletics channels with more streaming information to be announced closer to the time.

World hammer silver medallist and home favourite Merlin Hummel (82.77m PB) will face strong opposition on home soil, including three other throwers with lifetime bests in excess of the 80 metre-barrier.

Hummel faces a field including three-time European champion Wojciech Nowicki from Poland (82.52m), European U20 champion Armin Szabados from Hungary (80.95m) and Czechia’s Volodymyr Myslyvcuk (80.69m), the surprise winner at the European Throwing Cup in Nicosia in March.

Reigning Olympic shot put champion Yemisi Mabry (nee Ogunleye) also faces strong international opposition, including fellow 20 metre-plus throwers Maggie Ewen from the United States (20.45m) and former world and European indoor champion Auriol Dongmo from Portugal (20.43m), both in excess of Mabry's PB of 20.37m.

Reigning European indoor champion Menno Vloon from the Netherlands has also been confirmed for the pole vault. Vloon will face Turkish record-holder Ersu Sasma as well as leading German pole vaulters Torben Blech and Bo Kanda Lita Baehre, the latter the silver medallist behind Armand Duplantis at the 2022 European Athletics Championships in Munich.

As previously announced, Australia’s Matt Denny and Germany’s Steven Richter will renew their nascent rivalry in the discus after the pair threw 74.04m and 74.00m respectively in Ramona in April and 2022 European champion Gina Lückenkemper will face fellow sub-11 second competitor Maia McCoy from the United States in the 100m.

European champion Malaika Mihambo will star in the long jump and Karl Bebendorf will also contest the rarely-contested 2000m steeplechase.
