  • Garcia beats Nader to world indoor 1500m gold

Spain’s Mariano Garcia stormed back to the top of middle-distance running with a commanding 1500m victory in Kujawy Pomorze on Sunday (22), adding to the world indoor 800m title he claimed four years ago in Belgrade.

The win marks a significant return to form for Garcia, who also captured 800m gold at the 2022 European Athletics Championships in Munich. This time, however, he proved his range and race intelligence over the longer distance with a composed, tactical performance.

Up against Portugal’s Isaac Nader — the reigning world 1500m champion from Tokyo — Garcia took control early, moving to the front with six laps remaining. From there, he dictated a measured tempo, keeping the pace controlled rather than explosive.

Still leading at the bell, Garcia injected another surge, with only Nader able to stay in contention. But with around 75 metres to go, the Spaniard unleashed a decisive kick. Although visibly tiring in the closing strides, Garcia had done enough to break Nader’s resistance.

He crossed the line in 3:39.63 to secure gold, while Nader settled for silver in 3:40.06. Australia’s Adam Spencer claimed bronze, finishing 0.20 seconds further back.
