France’s Agathe Guillemot concluded her summer season with victory on the roads at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark on Saturday (19) morning.
Having finished fourth in the 1500m at both the World Athletics Indoor Championships and European Athletics Championships in 2026, Guillemot ended her summer campaign on a high with victory in the mile in the Danish capital.
The Frenchwoman positioned herself on pre-race favourite Freweyni Hailu’s shoulder before kicking away decisively for victory in a European record of 4:22.74, eclipsing Jemma Reekie’s recently set mark of 4:23.25 from Düsseldorf earlier this month.
Guillemot won by almost two seconds from Hailu in 4:24.35 with Kenya’s Mirriam Cherop completing the podium in 4:25.71.
"When we turned for the last part I kept pushing. My coach said: 'When you are French, you keep pushing and pushing and pushing.' And I believed in it. It is nice to finish with a medal," said Guillemot who also started her season with a silver medal in the mixed relay at the World Cross Country Championships.
"It was not a perfect season, but it had a perfect end. The plan for 2027 is training, training, training. I love running. I love cross country. Indoor, outdoor. So maybe I will do European Cross Country in December. It is good for my shape to do long distances. I love to a lot of different things."
There was also an excellent performance on home soil for Annemarie Nissen. A training partner of Keely Hodgkinson and Georgia Hunter Bell at the M11 Training Group, Nissen surpassed all expectations with a fourth-place finish in a Danish record of 4:26.78.
"I feel like I won. I would never complain about being fourth. A fourth place is the best that I have ever done. It was amazing to be running in the streets here. I live just around the corner and I felt so much at home. It was the best experience ever and my best time ever," she said.
