A first-time clearance at 2.30m was enough to give Oleh Doroshchuk his first global title at the Kujawy Pomorze 2026 World Indoor Championships on Saturday (21), as he won the men’s high jump.

In doing so, he followed in the footsteps of Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who won the women’s event on Friday (20), completing a Ukrainian double.

The duo repeated the same feat they achieved at the Apeldoorn 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships—this time on the world stage.

Standout performer

Mexico’s Erick Portillo was the only other athlete to clear 2.30m, doing so on his third attempt. Both athletes then attempted 2.33m but were unable to clear it, each recording three failures. As a result, Doroshchuk won on countback to secure his first global medal of any colour.

Doroshchuk was the standout performer throughout the competition, producing a clean card at 2.17m, 2.22m, and 2.26m. At that stage, he was level with South Korea’s two-time world indoor champion Woo Sang-hyeok and Jamaica’s Raymond Richards. However, both failed to clear 2.30m after three attempts and shared the bronze medal.

Czechia’s world bronze medallist Jan Štefela also cleared 2.26m, but a series of earlier failures on his card left him in sixth place.
